When a cat has kidney infection, the cat will do its toilet outside the litter tray, which will be on the grass instead of the dirt. Cats also will drink dirty drain water instead of water in their bowl.

Cats with kidney infections will typically spend a lot of time in their litter boxes and will appear to strain when trying to pass urine, often only producing a few drops. Their urine may also be pink in color, indicating the presence of blood.

Has your cat been trying to urinate but unable to? Have you seen pink/bloody urine? When you gently press the kidney area, does it wince/cry? Has it experienced appetite loss? If you see these symptoms, or suspect your cat is ill, make an appointment with your vet.

Cats hide illness, so early detection is NECESSARY, but difficult. Your cat will strain in the litter box, and you may think it's constipation. He will grow listless and not eat, more importantly not drink. This kills a cat quickly, so you need to get him to a vet.
