No matter where the site of an infection is the first line treatment is antibiotics. A kidney infection is no different. However, the duration of antibiotic use is generally longer.

A kidney infection is diagnosed by either a urine culture or an ultrasound. Treatments include antibiotics by mouth, and drinking plenty of liquids. Some people report relief from drinking cranberry juice. While the acid in the juice has been shown to loosen some bacteria from the urinary tract, it does not cure the infection.
