Make sure you have good kitchenware such as cake pans, jelly and pudding molds, and decorating tools like piping bags. Also, a clean white plate can make an otherwise plain-looking dessert look great, especially if you get good at drizzling chocolate or coulis.

Put the desserts on plain white dessert plates. That makes the colors of the dessert stand out more. Makre a dessert that has levels such as a volcano cake. Drizzle the sauce or the icing in a pattern so that it covers almost the whole plate.

Individual desserts look fancier than spooning out apple crisp or a slice of pie. Invest in some ramekins and ring molds to make individual mousses, cakelets and the like. Garnish is also important. Use sliced and fanned out strawberries, mint leaves, chocolate shavings, a dusting of icing sugar/cocoa powder.

Decide what dessert you want to present, look up pictures of desserts online or even take a photo of a dessert from your favorite restaurant. Create a mental image of what you want your dessert to look like and what components are going to be on the plate.
