You will have to look for signs of it such as holes it has chewed, droppings etc. Chances are it can hide from you pretty well. Do NOT use poison or glue traps unless you want it to die in your walls, a trap that will catch it completely is best. Remove the things that have attracted it.

Search the basement and attic. Listen, for it it moving around in the walls. If you locate it, try to force it outside through a door. You may have to trap it. Use peanut butter or any food for bait. Don't use poison, the rat will probably die in a place you won't be able to get it, horrible smell.

Put some food at some dark and humid spots in the house and the rat would definitely come if a rat is there in the house.
