It is always best to have this checked by a licensed contractor or asbestos removal technician. You don't want to stir up any asbestos particles into the air by checking yourself.

Your best option is to contact a professional. Asbestos can be dangerous if mishandled, and you arent even sure if what you're dealing with is asbestos. The professional will come to your house, classify just what the mystery substance is, and give you advice on how to deal with it.

When questioning asbestos, you should first call a professional. Usually this is done by an Home Inspector. He will determine if there is asbestos on your premise. If he indicates that there is asbestos problem, then a contractor should be called. Never try to fix any asbestos problem yourself, unless you are a professional in that areaa.

If your boiler was made before 1984 it probably has asbestos seals. Asbestos in boilers has now been banned from 1984. The asbestos was used in seals on the boiler which disintegrate into the air when disturbed so a technician working on the boiler poses a health risk to himself.

First and most important, usually anything like old boilers built before 1980 have a good chance of containing asbestos. Asbestos becomes dangerous when it becomes airborne. If you see any sign of this pertaining to your boiler, such as unknown threads, it will need analyzed.A good rule is if much is present don't try to remove it yourself.

The safest test method is to call in a professional. Poking around in an area where there is asbestos releases asbestos dust into the air. Inhaling that dust is harmful. If you want to check it yourself, first don protective gear; then seal off the room. After removing a sample, there are often labs that will test it for you.

You should hire a qualified asbestos professional to inspect your boiler. There are relatively simple and cheap tests that are performed to confirm the presence of asbestos. Asbestos can look many different ways. Generally it appears as a friable solid that breaks down to a soft dust. However it can also be present as a hard plate.
