Keep the mission visible – post it wherever teams are working and use a variety of media to keep it in front of people. Assist teams in writing clear goals stating how they will contribute to the mission. Make each goal measurable. Post each team's progress on its goals and foster healthy competition. Provide plenty of feedback and reward opportunities.

To motivate separate teams to achieve one purpose one must appeal to the team's and the individual's sense of purpose. This project is world-changing. Emphasize that point. Tell them the merits of the project in both simple terms and in metaphor. Help them to understand their parts in this endeavour both independentally and as a team.

Involve them in the end result and make the teams feel like they are part owners in the mission objective. Give them tangible rewards for project completion and intentionally overlap each teams' goals to make collaboration an essential feature of the project. Assign one member of each team as liaison, and have liaison meetings to pool ideas.

Get them excited. Motivation is what you are asking for. What motivates people include altruism, greed, competition, and self-satisfaction. Altruism, you must show them the value of the project itself--show them how it is world-changing. Greed--you could pay bonuses. Competition--set up milestones to reach. Self-satisfaction--reiterate the feel of job well done.

Appeal to their sense of entrepreneurship and make sure to highlight how their participation will benefit them in terms of exposure. In addition, highlight the vital nature of your project and its value to those involved and to the beneficiaries. In short, appeal to every reason they might have for joining your project, both professional and personal.
