Grass does not require alot of light. Some grasses do better in shade though. Pick a variety that prefers this environment and that will actually be the greenest spot.

My friend is doing this right now, and so far no luck. So far, the best is the Shady Patch by Scotts, which has everything in the mix. But you need to keep it soaked, not just sprinkled but soaked. We finally saw a few blades of grass after 3 weeks. Do this in the fall.

Growing grass needs sun. Try and plant ferns and hostas in the shady area. They like shade and will come back every year.

The best way to get grass to grow in shade is to use a seed blend that is specific to shade. You may also try sod, however may have mixed success.
