Try not to put too much stock to what you hear on the radio. What they are selling is just that some credit card companies will be willing to settle on your bill for less than the balance. That is something you can do yourself. Just call them up yourself.

this is called settling your accounts, you are able to do this yourself. beware if you write off more then $600 you pay taxes and it stays on your credit.
