You can either hire a title company or attorney to provide you with a title search to verify any liens or you can go to your local court house and check for liens against your property yourself. Once the title search has been completed you will know conclusively if there are any liens against you.

You can contact any title insurance company, who would be able to perform a title search of the documents recorded against your property. If there were any liens against your property, they would show up in the title search.

A title company can issue you a title policy that means they will check for liens and insure that there are none. An attorney can do an abstract of title that will provide you with information on liens, but no insurance policy to refer back to.

In Iowa, and I assume in all states, just go to the County Recorder's office at the courthouse and ask to see the liens on the address of your property.
