The best way is to use only storebought rocks that are specifically marked for use in a fire pit and make sure to keep them dry between uses.

You need to ensure that you are not using any rocks with cracks/fractures. Rocks (especially river rock) need to be completely dry (a month in the summer sun and no moisture is good). Don't use any shale or sedimentary rock. When in use, don't put any liquids on it.

Use stones that are not very porous in your fire pit. Porous stones may trap water and explode when heated. You may try firebricks.
