Tort law is a body of laws that address and provides remedies for civil wrongs that are not the result of contractual obligations. They give recourse to those harmed.

Tort laws are CIVIL laws, not criminal. Tort laws therefore carry penalties that revolve around money, restitution, equity. Criminal laws carry fines and therefore also include money consequences but also include possibilities of jail time. Because of this difference, people with a record of tortious judgments against them do not suffer the stigma of other offenders.

Tort law is focused solely on the civil liability of a person who wrongs another, rather than duties a person owes to the public at large. It is mostly judge-made.
