Actually, tornadoes are not usually named. They are not around long enough to be named. They only last about ten to fifteen minutes and they do not have a lot of warning for forecasters to name them.

Tornadoes are not named because they are such short lived storms. There are over one thousand tornadoes in the United States each year, another reason why these storms are not named. Tornadoes are classified on a scale called the Fujita-Pearson scale according to their strength. There are seven levels on the Fujita scale from F0 to F6.

Tornadoes are not named. Hurricanes are named by the Tropical Prediction Center in Miami from a list of names agreed upon at international meetings of the World Meteorological Organization.

Some wind storms, like hurricanes and typhoons are named, and a list of names is produced in advance every year. Tornadoes, however, are not named. Sometimes, the media will refer to them by the area where they have struck, but they have no official names.
