Hurricanes are massive storms hundreds of miles across that start over the ocean but sometimes hit islands or coastal areas and cause flooding and wind damage. Tornadoes are much smaller phenomena spawned by regular thunderstorms over land. They cause wind damage as well but not on the scale of hurricanes.

A tornado is a funnel of air that spirals from the base of the clouds down to earth. Tornados usually occur over land. A hurricane occurs in the ocean and begins as a tropical storm which generates heat from the ocean and powers the storm which causes the wind speeds to increase. Hurricanes usually die over land.

Tornados are strong wind that moves in circular motion. Hurricanes occur in tropical areas, which cause strong wind and heavy rains.
