U know when your phone is unlocked by checking the Lock which appears on your screen. If it has disappeared then it means your mobile phone is unlocked.
After unlocking a cell phone, remove your current SIM and insert a Sim from another carrier. If your phone accepts that SIM and you can make a call from it the it is unlocked.
