If your cat repeatedly shakes its head, rubs its head on furniture, scratches its ears constantly-this can be signs of ear infection or perhaps ear mites. Infection of the ear canal or middle ear can cause the cat to lose sense of balance. A few drops of almond or olive oil in the ear can eliminate the mites.

If you mean cleaning your cat's ears for mites etc, it certainly shouldn't except momentarily. If Puss's ears are blocked or infected, it will affect her balance. Sometimes you may see a cat playing with its ears like a dog with it's tail, and falling over, that's just goofiness.

No, the part of the ear that affects balance is not affected by cleaning. A cat's inner-ear (as well as a human's) is largely responsible for balance, so unless you puncture the ear drum, cleaning has no effect.
