Medicare covers lapband surgery for patients with type 2 diabetes and a body mass index(BMI) of 35 or over.

As of February 21, 2006 Medicare has expanded coverage to bariatric surgery includind lapband. However, your physician must prove that this is the only method that willhelp you.

Medicare will only cover procedures that are medically necessary. This generally does not include lapband procedures. However, if a doctor is willing to say that the surgery is medically necessary due to a reason other than just being overweight (heart problems, for example), it might be possible to get approved.
