Heck yeah! Wel maybe not a male but if you get them at birth i hear they make that purring sound perry the platypus makes when you pet them, but when someone else pets em, they dont, it would make me feel special :D

Considering they are wild animals, and one of the only venomous mammals, no. They are very rare, and there is a relatively little research on platypi, which are aquatic mammals which would add another reason why this would be a terrible pet. I also believe that they are an endangered species, therefore it would not be acceptable as a pet.

Platypi are actually quite common.  add a comment

Platypi are not endangered, they are at least concern on the IUCN  add a comment

actually, only the males are venomous and they aren't considered endangered, and they are only semi-aquatic. that being said they probably would not be the best pet anyways.  add a comment

Platypus are very hard to live with. Mine hates feta cheese and people with pimples. He has a problem with those wearing red hats. Though sombreros are fine.

No.They are a protected animal, they cant be owned legally as a pet. The males have a venomous spur, which is excruciating to adults, fatal to small dogs, babies.

no they aren't protected. Australian law says a platypus cant be held in captivity, very few zoos are even allowed to have a platypus exibit.but persononly i think a platypus would make a totally cool pet  add a comment

Sadly, no. I know someone who has a platypus and hates it. All it does is eat poop and swim. Sure they are really cool looking ans strange creatures but they are difficult and EXPENSIVE to take care of. Only the males are venomous.

apperentally the males are poisonous, they have a HUGE appitite, and are the size of a housecat. Other than that there probably fairly good-i love platypuses-so don't get me wrong and think I am putting them down. They have a poison barb on the back of their legs-OnLy ThE mALes

Females maybe, but certainly not males. Males have a poisonous spur on their hind legs that causes severe pain for humans.

posted by Anonymous
Don't touch it? Or like most other animals it could probably be surgically removed without causing much harm to the animal. Sort of like removing the skunk's spray to keep it as a pet.  add a comment

The females would be okay, but males have a poisonous spur on their back legs. The poison won't kill you, but causes extreme, excruciating pain!

Platypi make great pets. You may have to tar and feather it to get through customs though. I guess you could remove it's bill and call it a beaver but that's just cruel.

If you need attention that badly... get a giant sombrero,.. leave the little guys alone.

people don't want them because they want attention. Most of these people want them because they're amazing. You're the one that wants attention if you take time out of your day to bag on innocent people that just want a pet.  add a comment

I agree, there are plenty of domesticated species to choose from, why go for a wild one that won't do any good to you or it.  add a comment
