Do you think people are inherently good or inherently bad? Why?

"Good" and "Bad" are human constructs, not nature's. When a person commits any act, society as a whole assigns goodness or badness to it over time. When a baby has a tantrum, others may see it as a bad act but to the baby it's just self-expression.

ok, even if we grant that goodness and badness are human constructs, the question still stands... i have had many discussions about this, and i strongly believe that we are inherently good (based on how society assigns that term), but it is very hard to argue this point.  add a comment

Yes because the Bible said so they are. Psalm 14:3 states no on is good and in Revelation 12:9 states that the entire world is lead astray by the Devil.

I believe that people are inherently bad. We are born with a selfish, instinctive nature. We are programmed to survive. We are willing to do whatever it takes to survive, even if it is deemed bad by others. You have to learn to be 'good' but you don't have to learn to be bad. It is instilled within us.

People are born selfish, and have to be taught to be "good" in order to fit into society.

I think, when born, we are neither good nor bad. As we grow, we learn acceptable and unacceptable behavior. Also, being exposed to religion, and believing that there is something higher than us helps us on our quest to be the best that we can be.

Good. Because most people you meet are nice.

All people are 'bad' by nature, as we are born into sin. However, you can be a nice person in some aspects, but still be considered bad in others. Not one person on this earth (living past, present, or future) can ever be entirely good.
