Grass seeds don't need to be planted very deep, if you are willing to put in a bit of labor to make sure the soil is tilled a good inch or two deep, and ensure that the grass gets plenty of water for the first couple of weeks once sowed, you should be fine doing it by hand.

Well not really you can basically do all your grass seeding by yourself at your own expense which is better.
