Tall Fescue, creeping Red Fescue, and hard Fescue can be planted in sandy soil. Grass does not really grow very good in just sand. If you place some compost on top to about 2' and then place your grass seeds you will have better luck and just about use whatever grass grows well in your area. Happy Spring!

Recommended for sandy areas, these grasses can tolerate full sun. Bermuda grass is great for high activity areas. Zoysia grass, carpet grass, centipede grass, bahai grass and seashore paspalum are some of the grasses that also work well in tropical climates. The product names for Bermuda grass include La Prima and Yukon. Zenith and Compadre are names for zoysia grass.

Argentine bahiagrass is a good option for warmer climates, but your best bet would be to infuse the sand with soil and other fertilizers to allow the type of grass that grows best in your area.

Any grass will grow in the sand, no one type is better than the next for sand. For each type of grass you want to find a way to add nutrients to the sand.

The specific climate will dictate what type of seed to plant. No matter what type of seed you use, the most important thing to remember is to water daily during the beginning stages of the lawn.

When you are looking at the types of grass seeds at the garden center, look for the words "drought tolerant" on the bag. For a northern or midwestern climate, tall fescue is good. If you live in the south, try planting some bahia, zoysia, or bermuda grass. Whatever you plant will need to be watered often until it is established.
