What should I know before planting grass seed over existing dead lawn?

You should soak (sprinkle) your dead lawn daily for 3-4 days and then wait another 7-10 days. If weeds start to come up use an herbicide to kill them. Give it 2 days and then reseed the lawn. You could roto-till instead but will be more work.

It's best to till the surface first, but there is another way! In October or November, thickly scatter seed. Then scatter soil over them lightly. Snow will protect the seeds, spring melt will work them into the ground, to sprout in early spring. Then lawncare as usual.

The grass seed will not grow if the reason for the lawn dying is not addressed. Make sure that no residual pesticide, herbicides or toxins remain.

first you shouldrun the sprinklers about 3-4 days. then all weeds will come out. then apply the herbicide to kill them,it will take few days to see the results then you can go and plant the grass seed and be certain that the grass seed that is the only growing thing.
