Yes, all ants bite. If your kids stepped in the ant bed, then the ant is going to feel like your kid is in its territory and of course it is going to bite or sting your child. Get you some instant grits and pour on the ant bed. They eat them, swell up, and pop. It kills ants fast.

Red and black striped ants do sting. I read that they are a type of wasp and gives a very venomous sting and are called Velvet ants. They are also known to be a Cow Killer.

They can, but may not. Most ant nests have a group of defenders-- larger, more aggressive ants that may attack anything if the nest is disturbed.
