Snakes have dry, unscented skin. They will not smell, stink, or cause bad odors in your house. Their food might though - they generally eat rodents!

In general, snakes do not smell, but like all pets, things will become unpleasant if their enclosures are not properly cleaned on a regular basis. Dirty substrate, shed skins, and uneaten prey should be removed from the tank or cage as quickly as possible.

Some ratsnakes will musk when frightened or startled, and sometimes retain that smell, but most snakes have no smell at all when kept in a clean cage. If you do not want a snake that musks, get a python or boa constrictor and avoid ratsnakes. Buy from a reputable breeder, and ask the breeder about musking before you buy.

As long as you keep the snake's vivarium clean, it will not smell. You need to spot-check it for waste and fully clean it out once a month.
