As a permanent resident of California, I was called for jury duty while I was attending college in Texas. The county accepted this as an exemption and I didn't have to go.
Any U. S. citizen at least 18 years of age can be called to complete jury duty. There are hardship exclusions but you must attend the court meeting and petition the judge to allow you to skip jury duty. It is not guaranteed right and it must be a demonstrated hardship.
The rules for jury duty vary from state to state. In most states, anyone who is over 18 is eligible, including students. Many of these states will let you claim an exemption from actually serving, but this does vary.
