Each elector casts distinct votes for President and Vice President. No elector may vote for both candidates if both candidates live in the same state as that elector.

The 12th Amendment explains the method to be used within the electoral college to determine who the President and Vice President should be. Whoever wins the Electoral College becomes President. Traditionally, the runner up then became Vice President. Later, the political parties ran a President and Vice President together, and the pair that won the College took office together.

The twelfth amendment is the main reason we have state by state ballots. This method was designed to replace the electoral college under article II, and became an amendment in 1804.
