The 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, giving women the right to vote. The 19th Amendment was proposed by President Woodrow Wilson on January 9, 1918. The House passed it the next day, but the Senate refused to pass it. In May 1919, both houses passed the amendment and sent it to the states. Illinois was the first to ratify on June 10; Tennessee's ratification on August 18, 1920, made it official.
