The Italian word "essere" means "be" in English. It's used when making a statement to about another person. In question or personal form the word is different than essere. So a sample sentence would be "Devi essere piĆ¹ vigilanti." Translated into English the sentence is: "You've got to be more vigilante."

The verb "essere" is the verb "to be". It states existence, but it can also be used as an auxiliary verb, to form other tense compounds.
