Can you tell me the origins of the Lhasa Apso breed?

I've heard lots of different stories and I'm not sure what's true.

The Lhasa Apso breed was designed to guard homes of the nobility and monasteries in Tibet and dates back hundreds of years.

The breed comes from Tibet. The monks used them as a watch dogs. The dogs where bred to alert the monks when someone entered the monasteries that was not suppose to be there.

They are from Tibet which is a part of the Himalayan Mountains. Which the dog was named after the city of Lhasa it is like a little town in this area.
