Cleaning rats is fairly simple, it's important not to get their heads wet. All you need is to use warm water and a mild shampoo, like johnson baby shampoo or you can get shampoo from the pet store.

The parents normally clean their babies or they will groom themselves. If they are covered with some foreign, oily or sticky substance mix a small amount of dish detergent with water and use a washcloth to wipe them clean. Cages should be cleaned with hot water, stay away from chemicals.

Provide a clean cage, and let the mother clean baby rats until they are weaned. When they are older, you can clean them with a damp cloth or baby wipe.
