This varies with your health and fitness level; you should talk to your doctor first. Assuming that you are medically cleared, you should maintain your target heart rate for at least a total of 30 minutes every workout. If possible, more is even better.

When you're doing a cardiovascular or resistance training workout that last about an hour, maintain your target heart rate for at least twenty minutes of your total workout. You can go over the twenty minutes as long as you don't go over your maximum heart rate.

It'll depend on your age. For example, Age 30 is 95-162 BPM, Age 60 is 80-136. Check the American Heart Association's website for a lot more information.

You will want to maintain it for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This is recomended by most doctors and trainers.
