My twin nieces, two-and-a-half-years old, will be staying with me for a week.

You could take them to the local park and let them play with the other children. Try taking them to the library. They sometimes have storytime for young children. My son loves to do this.

Make crafts with them and bond with them. Get to know what they like to do so if they have to stay with you next time it'll be easier.
