Absolutely. Too much grass seed can lead to over development of root structures, causing most of the grass to die, and actually leaving you with a thinner coverage of grass.
not really a handful per square foot is usually the norm a good trick is the week before put the grass seed in a black binliner with some compost leave to germinate slighty when you spread it out the birds wont peck at it
