The gallbladder is a small green muscular sac that is located on the ventral surface of the liver. Its job is to store bile that is not immediately needed for digestion. When a gallbladder has been removed, the bile duct enlarges in order to assume the bile-storing role, making a person capable of living without the gallbladder.

Many people live without their gallbladder. The gallbladder serves as a storage place for bile. When taken from the body, you can still digest food as bile is made and secreted by the liver as well. Gallbladder problems and diseases leading to surgical removal of the gallbladder are very common
