More than likely the bands in your transmission are worn out. The best solution without a rebuild is to change out (not flush) the transmission fluid and filter. When you put new fluid in, be sure to use at least 1 quart of Lucas Oil transmission fix, it works very well for mitigating transmission damage.

Generally, there are two things that cause a transmission to slip. The first is cheap: it's low on fluid, or the fluid is old. Have a shop replace the transmission fluid. If that doesn't help, then the clutch bands are wearing out. Save money: buy a new car.

First, I would check the transmission fluid level. It should be bright red, if it's brown, you need new fluid. If it's full and fresh, the transmission needs further service.

When you have a manual transmission slipping it is usually the clutch. On an automatic transmission it can be a couple of different things. Check your transmission fluid level. If it is fine, then it is going to be either your torque converter or the inner gears of the transmission itself. That is not a DIY repair.
