There are many types of blankets you can easily make for cheap. Or, get a little more creative and put together a ready-to-make scrapbook. Make areas she can add photos/items to, and have each page set up to record key moments(birth info, first tooth, steps, words, and everything).

If you know how to knit or crochet you can make a pair of booties. If you sew, get some flannel and trim it with bias binding to make pretty burp cloths.
