Can you get Internet access on an airplane?

Yes, provided the carrier is relaying your cellphone provider's EVDO or GPRS signals and you have a data plan for your provider and have the necessary hardware.

I don't know about all airlines, but Delta will be offering Gogo® In-flight Internet Access on approximately 300 airplanes in 2009. The charges for this, at this time, are $5. 95 for a flight of less than 1. 5 hrs. , $9. 95 for 1. 5 to 3 hrs, and $49. 95 for 30 days on a single airline.

Almost every airplane offers an internet connection of some sort. You may have to pay a fee or use one of their little notebooks but some are even more convenient.
