Can you direct me to a couple of easy patterns for crocheted ponchos?

Go to the library and get patterns, instead of buying them. When you find something that you like make copies of the pattern and return the books. This is a cheap way. Also I would recommend a crochet club. I belong to one and we meet once a month.

Try the websites for the various yarn manufacturers. Berrocco, Red Heart, and Lion Brand all have a very large selection of patterns on their sites. If nothing there suits you, the easiest way is to just crochet 2 rectangles and then sew them together so one short side of each rectange joins the long side of the other.

Crocheted ponchos are really easy to make and the easiest one out there is putting two rectangles together. You make the rectangles then sew them together. Do a search for easy crocheted ponchos and you'll find the pattern as well as many other similar ideas. Grandkids look adorable in them.
