As long as you can show an insurable interest, you have the right to purchase insurance, even if the vehicle is not titled in your name. Examples would be a relative that has co-signed the loan or perhaps is financing the vehicle.

Absolutely, often spouses and parents take out policies for vehicles that their children/spouses own, but if the owner of the vehicle will be driving the vehicle be sure and add them as a driver on the policy.

Car insurance is specific to the individual to whom the vehicle is titled. If you own the car, but it is in your parents' names or your spouse's name, make sure that person(s) is/are listed on the policy as additional insureds, and or drivers.

You can buy insurance and include cars you drive infrequently and are listed as a secondary driver on. If you have auto insurance, it covers you in whatever car you are driving, including borrowed cars, rented cars, and new vehicles that have not had the title changed yet. Your car insurance would even cover accidents in a test drive.
