Yes, it very possibly could be. Though, often times, hyperthyroidism is mistaken for Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome. The only way to know this for sure is to schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist so that they can have some blood work done on you. Other symptoms are high blood pressure, irregular menstruation, shaky hands and increased perspiration.

Thyroid is of two types - hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. In the first one you gain weight and in the other one you lose it.The key symptom of hypothyroidism is rapid weight gain. Most often this disease happens to the women during or immediately after pregnancy. It is well known that a diet low in iodine is associated with hypothyroidism.

Weight gain is more commonly associated with low thyroid function, because it can result in slow metabolism and less efficient burning of calories. High thyroid, on the other hand, tends to result in weight loss, because the calories are being burnt too fast. However, high thyroid can also increase appetite, so MIGHT lead to weight gain in a few people.

One of the usual symptoms of hyperthyroidism, or over-activity of the thyroid gland, is gradual weight loss, not weight gain. This will happen even if you are eating more. You may gain weight initially due to your increased appetite but then you will gradually lose weight, despite eating more.
