Can the strut spring be tightened?

I have a Toyota Solara 2000 and the strut springs are chattering. Can they be tightened to stop the chatter? And, if so, what is the procedure?

No they cannnot be tightened. The problem is most likely a worn out mount allowing travel of the system that should not be there. Take the vehicle to a reputable shop for proper diagnosis.

When spring get older the can sag leading to movement and noise which can actually cause damage. The proper way to fix this is to replace them.

Follow the strut to the top of it's "tower" and there is a nut at the top that you can re-torque. Toyota sedan strut towers are designed poorly and usually need larger bump stops.

Well the springs should never be that loose. The may have sagged. You could try shimming it with rubber spacers but you might need a new set of springs.

When a strut makes noises it typically means that the spring has sagged and it is moving around in it's mount. Check out the suspension for any loose components. You may need to replace your springs altogether or buy new struts.

As a vehicle gets older the coil can sag creating slack. Since this is the only thing controlling the suspension height there is no way to "tighten" everything back up unless you have aftermarket adjustable coil-overs. Typically you just have to install new springs or some kind of spacer.

More than likely what you have is an incorrect or faulty part from the manufacturer. I would suggest checking for recalls and technical service bulletins for your problem. Probably faulty strut spring dampner's.
