As a matter of fact, you are required to file taxes if you collected unemployment. Unemployment benefits in excess of $2400 per recipient are fully taxable at regular federal rates just like wages and salaries. You should enter the total unemployment compensation received on line 19 of your 1040 form to be included in your total income.

Even if you have collected unemployment for the entire year, you are required by the United States Government to file taxes if your minimum gross income exceeds a certain amount. For the tax year 2009, that threshold is $9,350. If your minimum gross income exceeds this amount, you are required to file taxes with the Internal Revenue Service.

Yes, unemployment is taxable. However if your total income is under the IRS thresholds for filing, you may not have to file. You may also want to check with your tax preparer to see if there are other tax credits that you may qualify for. In 2009, the first $2400 of unemployment income is not taxable.

If you collected unemployment all year long you should file a tax return to see what you owe or will get back if you had taxes withheld. If you had no taxes withheld during the year you could owe so you should file a tax return. Unemployement taxes can be taxable depending on your total income for the year.
