Can an employer require a credit check on a job application?

An employer has the right to conduct a background check, criminal record check, previous employer check and credit check in order to assure the background/character of the potential hire. The applicant has every right to refuse and to seek employment elsewhere.

Yes; a credit check can be requested for certain jobs; however the employer must disclose to you that they are going to conduct such check and you as a potential employee must aurthorize the consent. It is done as a tool for employee screening.

An employer has the right to do a background check, which may include a credit check. Applicants are asked for permission for these matters to be investigated and must provide that permission before the employer is allowed to access this information.

Yes they can. In fact most companies are now requiring credit check as a condition of offering employmet. Make sure you know your credit situation before you apply

If the job involves handling money, like a cashier or bank teller, or if it involves the potential for fraud, like an insurance adjuster, yes, they can. Otherwise, no.
