Can a president use a veto to seek his self interest?

A President can only veto legislation sent to him by the House of Representatives and Senate. He can veto it because it is against his agenda, he disagrees with it, or even to punish legislators who sided against him.

Of course. But if it is overridden by Congress (and it probably will be), he has no choice but to sign it. And if it's obvious that he vetoed a bill for his own interests, he will not be re-elected, his party will probably also suffer, and there is a good chance people will start thinking impeachment.
