No they cannot. A hermit crab's shell is its protection from predators, other hermit crabs, and the elements. Without its shell it will loose its body moisture and die.
I wouldent see any reason that the crab should die if its shell falls off. The one thing that would be bad though is it would be open to attack, or anything that its shell shiels it from.
