Japan is a very conservative and homophobic society. Homosexual marraiges or civil unions have never ever been considered as it is seen as an abnormality. The eldest male child is considered the heir apparent and has to marry a good girl to carry on the family honor and name. A lesbian would have it just as hard to survive.

Same sex marriages are not performed in very conservative, traditional Japan, however, recently there has been not-quite-clearly stated legislation that Japan will recognize same sex marriages of individuals married in a venue that recognizes same, which is very positive- it is recent that Japan decertified homosexuality as a mental illness.

Homosexual marriages are legal in Japan, no state prevents homosexuals from marrying. However they must marry a person of the other gender, not a member of their own.
