The distance between the Sun and Earth varies so slightly that it does not influence the passing of the seasons. Instead it is the tilt of our planet that dictates our warming and cooling cycles. When the Earth is tilted towards the Sun in the Northern Hemisphere it is summer and by contrast it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere.

The changes in the distance between the earth and the sun is definitely important in the cycle of seasons as it decides when it gets hotter or colder.
