The difficulty of the tax form is dependant on your filing status. The easiest is the 540-EZ form which requires less than ten answers to complete, using only standard deductions and no attachments. As your tax liability increases as well as your exemptions, so does the difficulty in completion.

The California state tax return is not very complicated at all if you know basic tax terms and can follow directions. I would recomend getting help for the first time from someone that has filled out state tax returns. The odds of missing a deduction then will be lower.

To the average citizen, a tax return form is complicated and contains many, many sections that need to be filled. Consulting the help of an account would be best.
