An amendment may be filed for any year. However a refund on an amended return will be issued only for three years after the due date of the return, or two years after taxes have been paid, whichever is later.

You can amend your federal return for up to 3 years past the due date of the return. If you filed an extension that year, you would have until October 15th. Your state return may have different time limits.

there is no time limit per se - if you need to make an amendment you are supposed to do so. Don't go back to anything more than 7 years old. Otherwise, you're required to file an accurate return, and could incur penalties if you're audited and THEY find the error.
