This seems very unusual for a Kohler motor. There would have to be a problem with the engine cooling system or a defect with the engine. Either way it should be covered under warranty with your MOWER'S brand (not Kohler, though they may help). As to how it would die, overheating causes severe, often irreparable engine damage.

If the motor is air cooled it is probably overheating because of grass and debris stuck in the cooling fins. Try washing off the crud and see what happens. It could also be running lean. Lean engines run hot. Use a screwdriver to adjust the carburetor to a richer setting.

I am assuming you have an air cooled motor. Air cooled motors are usually covered by cooling fins that guide forced air around the motor to carry the heat away. Make sure the fins are clean and not obstructed. Check the flywheel it is a large aluminum wheel with blades that act as a fan. Make sure it is intact.

Most likely the engine was not properly maintained. The oil was probably not topped off or replaced. If the oil was not replaced it can make the engine overheat.
