Make sure the laptop is sitting on a flat, hard surface, not fabric, so that it has plenty of air flow. If it's an Intel MacBook, download smcFanControl (search Google) and use this program to adjust the minimum fan speeds to verify that the fans are working so that you get more air flow.

Laptop overheating can either be caused by a failed fan or poor airflow around the vents. Try using it on a hard surface like a table.

Make sure that the fan is working for the first step. If it seems to not have a problem maybe where the computer is sitting, usually on a bed or cloth makes it overheat, also make sure the fan is not covered up and is able to release the heat.

It is a common problem that a laptop overheats when used continuously. Buy a coolant laptop pad which has three inbuilt fans, which can be kept under laptop and used.

The easiest thing that you can do is to buy a cooling pad. It connects to your computer by way of USB adapter and you sit the computer upon it. It blows cool air onto the machine from underneath and keeps the machine cool.

Though I have never had an apple laptop, try these suggestions. Move to a cooler room, sometimes hot rooms cause the computer to overheat itself. Try seeing if your vent to release air is blocked, try cleaning it out with canned air. All else fails, call tech support.
